April 2026: Divine Husbandry — Nurturing in God’s Gentle Rain

There comes a moment each spring when the garden appears a bit… chaotic.

The soil is rich and dark. Seeds have been sown, yet nothing visible has emerged just yet. Some mornings, you step outside, questioning whether anything is truly happening beneath the surface.

If you’ve ever tended a garden, you’re familiar with this phase. You water the soil and keep a watchful eye, but much of the essential work remains hidden from view.

In many ways, our spiritual journey mirrors this experience.

There are times when faith feels alive and evident, but there are also phases where we simply persist in prayer, remain obedient, and delve into the Word—trusting that God is at work even when we can’t perceive it.

This tension lies at the core of our study this month.

• How do we stay faithful when growth seems sluggish?
• How do we trust God when the harvest appears distant?

Scripture frequently addresses these questions by referring to the rhythms of agriculture.

James writes:

“Be patient therefore, brethren… Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.”
— James 5:7 (KJV)

A farmer does not hasten the harvest. He plants seeds, cares for the field, and waits for the rain that only God can bring.

This same theme is echoed in Paul’s message to the Corinthians:

“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”
— 1 Corinthians 3:6 (KJV)

Human efforts are significant. Planting is essential. Watering is important. Yet, the increase—the true growth—belongs to God alone.

Jesus illustrated this mystery in a parable about seeds growing in the soil:

“The seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.”
— Mark 4:27 (KJV)

This phrase carries a deeply reassuring message. Much of God’s work in our lives unfolds quietly. We may not grasp the process, but the growth is undeniably real.

Psalm 1 offers another beautiful illustration of this steady spiritual journey:

“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season.”
— Psalm 1:3 (KJV)

Notice that fruit emerges in its season.

There is a rhythm to God’s work: seeds are sown, roots develop, growth occurs gradually, and eventually, the fruit appears.

However, amidst this process, it’s easy to feel disheartened.

That’s why Paul encourages believers:

“Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
— Galatians 6:9 (KJV)

The promise of the harvest comes with a reminder: do not lose heart.

This month, we will delve into that quiet middle stage of spiritual life—the space between planting and harvesting.

Together, we will explore what it means to sow faithfully, nurture what God has initiated, and trust in the unseen work of the Lord.

You might be in a season where God is working below the surface of your life. It may not seem dramatic; it may even feel slow.

But the Lord knows how to cultivate a soul.

So this month, let us slow down, sit by the garden of our hearts, and await the gentle rain that God graciously provides.
