The Rooms That Built The Crafty Homestead
Share
How it started...
For a long time, I believed I had too many passions.
-
I loved gardening
-
I loved baking
-
I loved Bible study and ministry
-
I loved crochet and creating handmade projects
-
I was always eager to learn new things and develop systems that simplified life
Yet I always felt pressured to choose just one focus. After all, conventional wisdom typically advises to find your niche, stick to your lane, and concentrate on a single pursuit.
But, the reality is that all of these interests (and more) were an integral part of my life long before The Crafty Homestead came into being.
What eventually blossomed into The Crafty Homestead as we know it today, was not a meticulously crafted brand or project; rather, it was the blending of all kinds of elements.
Today, I refer to these multi-interest endeavers as... rooms in homestead.
And each room has its own story.
The Foundation: The Faith Room
If there is one room that supports all the others, it is the Faith Room.
Long before there was a website, a bakery, a garden, or a crochet pattern, there was faith. Throughout the years, God has profoundly influenced my life through ministry, Bible study, music, teaching, serving, and learning. Some chapters were filled with growth, while others were filled with questions. Many included both.
The Faith Room exists because faith is not merely one topic among many; it is the foundation that supports everything else. It shapes my approach to stewardship, creativity, work, learning, and how I care for what God has entrusted me with.
Not every post on The Crafty Homestead is a devotional, but every room is constructed on that same foundation.
The Kitchen Room
Some of my fondest memories involve my mother and grandmother’s kitchens.
The kitchen was never just a space for preparing food; it was where people gathered, conversations unfolded, and celebrations began.
As I grew older, baking became a cherished activity I returned to repeatedly.
-
Sometimes it was for family gatherings.
-
Sometimes it was for church events.
-
Other times, it was simply a therapeutic escape after a challenging week.
(And I could have dessert, too!)
More recently, baking has evolved into a cottage bakery journey that continues to develop. The longer I bake, the more I realize that it's not just about cookies, bread, or desserts.
It's truly about serving others.
The recipes are merely the means to an end.
The Craft Room
Creating has always been a passion of mine.
Whether it was mastering a new skill, experimenting with a project, or understanding how something functions, crafting/building has always been a part of my identity.
Crochet is one way my creativity manifests today, but it certainly isn’t the only one. The Craft Room exists to teach patience, problem-solving, perseverance, and creativity.
Sometimes, projects go exactly as envisioned. Most of the time... they do not 😅.
And that's perfectly fine. Many of the most valuable lessons arise in the space between the initial idea and the final product.
The current Sunburst Granny Market Tote exemplifies this journey. What began as a simple granny square gradually evolved into a larger project, a pattern, a teaching opportunity, and a reminder that progress often takes a winding path.
The Garden Room
The Garden Room may be the most unexpected of all.
There was a time in my life when everything felt broken. I had lost both my parents. I faced numerous other challenges in what seemed like every direction of life.
The days felt precarious in ways I had never encountered before. During that period, I found myself reflecting on the gardens of my childhood.
My parents cultivated gardens. My grandparents tended their own gardens and farms. Some of my happiest memories were made among growing plants.
So, I bought a few packets of seeds. Some cheap dirt from Walmart. And a handful of five-gallon buckets. I started a garden in a single parking space.
It wasn’t visually stunning. It wasn’t Instagram-worthy. But it provided me with something that needed my care.
Every day, there was something to water, check on, or nurture. Every day, I saw proof that growth was still achievable.
That little bucket garden helped me navigate one of the toughest seasons of my life. And today, some of those same buckets sit beside our new home, supporting another temporary garden as we work towards larger growing spaces in the future.
The garden taught me that growth often begins on a small scale. And sometimes, small is more than sufficient.
The Study & Library
If there is one room that subtly connects all the others, it is the Study and the Library.
I have always had a passion for learning and teaching.
-
Books.
-
Research.
-
Planning.
-
Systems.
-
Taking notes.
-
Understanding how things work.
Every room of The Crafty Homestead is filled with knowledge I have gained from those who have taught me, and what I want to pass on to others.
The Library naturally evolved from this reality. Over time, notebooks transformed into guides. Guides turned into resources. Resources became printable tools, journals, and tools that assist others in learning as well.
In many ways, the Library is simply a collection of lessons accumulated from each room.
The Rooms Still Waiting
The truth is, not every room has been fully opened yet.
There are still aspects of the story that await their turn to shine.
-
A Pet Room that will celebrate the animals that make our homestead feel whole.
-
A Music Room grounded in years of ministry and musical experiences.
-
A Garage/Workshop where projects are constructed, repaired, and explored.
-
An expanded Library focused on learning, books, planning, and intentional living.
-
And probably a few more, because new interests and passions turn up every day.
The rooms continue to grow because life itself is ever-evolving.
Why The Rooms Exist
People may wonder why The Crafty Homestead encompasses such a wide array of topics.
The answer is quite simple.
The rooms are not there because I expect anyone else to engage in all the same multi-interest activities that I plunge myself into. They exist because these are the elements that have shaped my life.
But some readers may find themselves spending most of their time in the Garden Room. Others may feel at home in the Kitchen. Some may come for crochet patterns. Others may stay for devotionals.
And that is exactly how it should be.
The aim of The Crafty Homestead has never been to persuade people to do everything. It’s simply been to empower individuals to create better lives for themselves and their families through practical skills, creative endeavors, faithful stewardship, and simple systems.
One room at a time. One season at a time. One step at a time. In whatever directions apply to each person’s situation.
And wherever you are in your journey, I hope you find a room that feels like home. We are so happy to have you here ❤
