March 2026: Breaking Ground
Share
Beginnings, preparation, and hope that doesn’t rush itself
Welcome to the doorway, friend. Lean your shovel there by the boot tray—the mud is thick today, isn't it? I’ve just pulled a batch of Lemon Lavender cookies out of the oven. Take a warm one; we need the energy before we head back out to the garden.
March never arrives cleanly. It comes with mud on its boots, days that feel almost like spring, and mornings that snap right back to a winter frost. If you feel like your energy is rising one moment and disappearing the next, don't worry.
This is what beginnings actually look like.
Clearing the Path
In the homestead rhythm, March opens the Garden. But this isn't the lush, blooming garden of July—it’s the real one. It’s the one where the ground is still stubborn and the work is mostly clearing away what died back in the winter.
March is about Breaking Ground, not producing results.
The "Why" Behind the Preparation
Think of the soil right now. It has to go through the "heave" of freezing and thawing to loosen up enough for seeds to take root. Your life is no different. One day you feel motivated (the thaw), and the next you feel fatigued (the freeze).
This isn't a sign that you’re "doing it wrong." It is the honest texture of early growth. You are loosening the soil of your routines so they can hold something new.
Protecting the Fragile
Beginnings are fragile. They need protection from being rushed into "performance." This month reminds us that preparation is progress. You don't need to do it all at once. Progress in March looks like:
- Clearing one space (maybe just one drawer or one corner of the yard).
- Making one plan (looking through your seeds without the pressure to plant).
- Choosing one beginning that feels possible—not ideal.
Neighbor Tip: If you're feeling that March chill, grab your Chunky Ribbed Beanie (our crochet project for the month!). It’s the perfect companion for those "in-between" days when the sun is out but the wind still has a bite.
A Gentle Invitation
As this month unfolds, give yourself permission to move at the pace of the season. You don’t need to plant everything today. You don’t even need to know how it all ends. You just need to prepare one place where growth is allowed to happen.
Ask yourself:
What feels ready to begin, even if it’s small and messy?
At the Hearth This Month
If you’re moving through March with the Grounded Hearth planner or journal, we are focusing on:
- Gentle beginnings (the Seed Inventory challenge).
- Noticing early signs of what is working in your life.
- Releasing unrealistic timelines—nature doesn't rush, and neither should you.
You’re allowed to start small. In fact, that’s the only way a garden ever truly begins.
